WHC 2020 to discuss halal industry’s way forward

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 — The halal industry’s course of action in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will be addressed at the 12th World Halal Conference 2020 (WHC 2020) on Oct 6.

To be held via a hybrid of virtual and physical events, the conference will also deliberate on the comprehensive recovery of the halal ecosystem, post-pandemic, said Halal Development Corporation Bhd chairman Datuk Mahmud Abbas.

“The global halal industry is definitely affected as factory production is not at a satisfactory and optimum level, and this is compounded by constraints in the supply chain.

“Throughout the pandemic, factories have been unable to satisfy the high demand from consumers and at the same time, most countries do not want to export,” he told Bernama after being interviewed on Bernama TV’s “Ruang Bicara” programme recently.

Mahmud said the WHC 2020 will feature several ambassadors such as the Japanese and Bosnian ambassadors sharing about the halal initiatives in their respective countries.

“We have also invited a panel of speakers related to Islamic finance to support the growth of the halal industry, and we will have a panel discussion on global innovation and the growing modest fashion market,” he said.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to launch the WHC2020, which will be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

The event is expected to attract 300 participants, in addition to 1,500 virtual participants.
